LABORATORIES
DETAIL OF VARIOUS LABORATORIES AND THEIR FACILITIES ARE AS FOLLOW:
The Department Of Civil Engineering has well equipped laboratories serving the needs of a budding engineer. We have various laboratories such as civil engineering surveying laboratory, material testing laboratory, CADD laboratory, geotechnical engineering laboratory, transportation engineering laboratory and environmental engineering laboratory.
SURVEYING LABORATORY I &II
The lab is specially equipped and maintained to substantiate the needs of a surveying student and help in the determination of points on or above or below the surface of earth. This lab plays a vital role in the branch of civil engineering. Each and every civil engineering work can be accomplished only through proper surveying and detailing. This lab helps to understand and familiarize the principles and different types of surveying such as plane table surveying, compass surveying, theodolite surveying and dumpy levelling. This lab also holds modern surveying equipments like tacheometer, total station etc.
MATERIAL TESTING LABORATORY I & II
The quality of building material used to construct any kind of structure plays a determining role in maintaining its durability. High quality building material ensures safety of the building and enhances its resistance against adverse climatic changes. Therefore, testing of building material, prior to its usage in construction, becomes of grave importance for construction material manufacturers. Materials testing lab is sometimes called an independent testing laboratory, and it deals primarily with testing, evaluating, and monitoring materials and processes used in construction.
The materials testing laboratory of the Civil Engineering department was setup in the year 2008 and it consists of the UTM, CTM, Brinell & Rockwell Hardness testing machine, Spring testing machine, Impact testing machine, Vee – Bee apparatus, Compaction factor testing machine, Tile testing machine etc. The laboratory is widely used for testing concrete cubes and cylinders and also to test the hardness and toughness of various materials used for construction which includes both steel and concrete. Various consultancy works are also extensively carried out in our lab.
It is a well-equipped laboratory which has all the facilities needed for testing of materials such as soil, aggregates and bitumen used in highway construction. The facilities are also being used extensively for bituminous mix Designs and Pavement design. The students get in depth training in the testing of properties of the above materials in the lab.
CADD LABORATORY
The Design and Drafting Lab plays an inevitable role in moulding a future civil engineer. This CAD software is used to increase the productivity of the designer, improve the quality of design, improve communications through documentation, and to create a database for manufacturing. CAD output is often in the form of electronic files for print, machining, or other manufacturing operations. The term CADD (for Computer Aided Design and Drafting) is also used. The latest version of CADD software is made available to the students which can be accessed any time in the lab. The lab also enhances the ability of the students to design and draft civil engineering plans so that the can take up individual works to serve the society apart from usual curriculum.
GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING LABORATORY
This laboratory provides a detailed study of soil tests and engineering behaviour of earth materials. It uses principles of soil mechanics and rock mechanics to investigate subsurface conditions and materials; determine the relevant physical/mechanical and chemical properties of these materials; evaluate stability of natural slopes and man-made soil deposits; assess risks posed by site conditions; design earthworks and structure foundations; and monitor site conditions, earthwork and foundation construction. This helps the students to know thorough knowledge about engineering properties of soil and evaluate compaction characteristics required for field application. This lab consists of unconfined compression testing machine, cosolidometre, direct shear test machine etc.
This branch of civil engineering is involved with multifarious activities related to highway engineering in particular and transportation engineering in general. It is a well-equipped laboratory related to highway material testing, pavement evaluation and traffic engineering studies
ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING LABORATORY
The environmental engineering laboratory is in the Civil Engineering Department. The field of environmental engineering focuses in investigating and solving problems at the interface between humans and their environment. Environmental engineers are also increasingly addressing issues of sustainability, energy, and resource recovery in order to make water safe to drink, properly treat and dispose of wastes, improve air quality, promote recycling and solid waste management, and clean up contaminated air, land, and water etc. In this lab, various experiments to analyse the quality of water samples are performed.
UNIQUE @CIVIL ENGG.DEPT
The Department always upholds a research culture, in parallel with the overall teaching- Technical learning process.
Seminars: Department of civil engineering conducts technical seminars on all relevant subjects for third and final year Students. These topics cover the latest developments and innovations in civil engineering for making students globally focused.
Establishment of Communication skills Training centre: college established a communication skills training centre for employability enhancement of unemployed students including engineering graduates.
Placement Training: Placement cell organizes per-placement training for the student groups to develop into complete professionals. Personality development, communication skills, resume preparation, aptitude test, interview skills, and group discussion, etc are taught.
And Video Visual Centre – Soft-Skills Training: The Audio and Visual Centre is Designed to Help Students Develop Effective Skills and Presentation Capabilities in Academic and Professional Settings. These Interactive Activities Focus On Work Environment And Real Life Situations.
Counseling: Career Counseling is available on the department directing students to choose the best possible stream that meets their requirement in a unique way. The students have mentors who handle their problems and make them focused about their targets. To motivate students to develop their overall personality in terms of career planning, goal setting and reskilling which will stand them in good stead even after getting the job.
Mini & Major Projects:
The best way to master a subject is by doing projects. Through a project students will not only get a deeper understanding of the subject but also gain hands-on practical experience. If they are looking to do internships in college, the best way to catch the companies’ attention is through projects. Projects are generally done as a combined team effort. Three or more students work under a guide or a staff to get a certain results. By doing a project, they will understand subject better
- Get practical experience
- Chance to showcase skills
- Learn about team work, communication skills and responsibilities.
When companies look for interns, they prefer students who have good understanding of the subject with at least some hands on experience. The best to achieve both is by doing projects.
REVIEW COMMITTEE:
This concept is a novel one initiated by the department. The class review committee for each class of the staff who teach the class and from among those students who are top rankers, middle rankers, and bottom rankers (three students from each level). Periodic meetings of these committees are held to review, whether the syllabus is completed in the stipulated time or not. If not, remedial measures are taken. Any special difficulty experienced by the staff and students are also discussed and necessary action is initiated in the interests of effective teaching learning process and better understanding between the faculty and student.
